Origin and history
The cemetery of Saint-Romain-la-Virvée, classified as a Historical Monument, is marked by two entrance porches built at the end of the seventeenth century. The western gate, adorned with a circular pediment topped by an iron cross, initially contained pots of fire, of which only one remained. This pediment is decorated with a sculpture, while its inner face has a partially deteriorated bas-relief.
The portal is distinguished by an arc and mouldings with distinct profiles. Its pediment houses a statue niche, accompanied by an inscription. Unlike the western portico, the latter retains a bas-relief on its opposite face, although its condition is degraded. These architectural elements, listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1974, reflect the funerary and religious art of the time.
Located in the commune of Saint-Romain-la-Virvée en Gironde, this cemetery illustrates the importance of burial sites in the social and religious organization of villages under the Ancien Régime. The porches, properties of the commune, bear witness to a desire to mark the sacred space with monumental entrances, typical of the local achievements of the late seventeenth century.
