Origin and history
The five Gallo-Roman mosaics discovered in Port-Sainte-Foy-et-Ponchapt (Dordogne) come from a villa built in the 1st century AD. This estate, destroyed at the end of the third century, was rebuilt at the beginning of the fourth century before building a religious establishment until 1850. The mosaics, dated from the fourth century, present geometric decorations, flower baskets and amphoras, showing an early Christian influence in the region.
The Gallo-Roman villa, searched on the current site called Le Canet, reveals a continuous occupation over nearly two millennia. The mosaics, classified as Monument Historique by order of 5 March 1926, were initially located in the property of Mr. Ducou. Their artistic style combines pagan traditions and Christian symbols, reflecting the cultural transition of late antiquity in Aquitaine.
The site, located at the approximate address 21 Route des Grands Champs, enjoys a geographical precision considered "passable" (note 5/10). Although remains are protected, their accessibility to the public or their integration into tourist routes is not explicitly documented in available sources. These mosaics remain a rare testimony of paleo-Christian art in Gallo-Roman rural areas.
