Origin and history
The Cinema Pathé in Montpellier is a monument representative of architecture dedicated to the seventh art at the beginning of the twentieth century. Located in the city of Montpellier, in the Occitanie region, this place reflects the rapid expansion of cinemas in France during this period. Pathé rooms, like this one, have played a key role in the democratization of cinema as a popular leisure.
In the first quarter of the 20th century, Montpellier, like many French cities, experienced a modernisation of its cultural infrastructure. The cinema, then booming, becomes a place of gathering and entertainment for the inhabitants. These rooms, often located in the city centre, reflect the social and urban transformations of the time, marking the shift towards a society more oriented towards collective leisure.
