Origin and history
The Douai racetrack, often referred to as the municipal circus, was built in 1904 under the direction of Jules Dropy, head of municipal works. This neo-classical building is unique in its 35-metre-diameter dodecagonal structure, topped by a metal frame dome. The latter would initially come from an attraction planned for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris, the panorama of Rome, never realized. At its inauguration, the building hosted circus performances as well as projections of travelling cinematographers until 1907.
A fire damaged the circus in the early 1920s, requiring a complete renovation in 1925. The façade was then rebuilt in Savonnières stone, while the interior kept its original stables. The monument, registered with the Historic Monuments in 1981, was rehabilitated from 1980 to become a cultural centre. Today, with the Théâtre d'Arras, he forms the Tandem national stage, dedicated to performing arts.
The capacity of 2,200 spectators and its history linked to technical innovations (metal carpentry, cinematograph) make it a significant testimony to the cultural and architectural life of Nord-Pas-de-Calais in the 20th century. Its status as communal property and its heritage inscription underline its importance in the regional landscape.
