Remparts of the citadel (ruins of the elders): inscription by order of 23 October 1941
Origin and history
The ramparts of the citadel of Mirebeau, located in the department of Vienna in the New Aquitaine region, constitute the ruins of an ancient defensive structure. Their exact location, noted as approximate (precision level 5/10), is located at 9001 Rue Nationale, in the municipality of Mirebeau (code Insee 86160). These remains have been protected since their inscription by ministerial decree in 1941, attesting to their heritage value despite their partial condition.
Medieval or modern citadels, such as Mirebeau's, played a strategic role in protecting cities and local populations. In Poitou-Charentes, a region marked by historical conflicts (religion wars, peasant revolts), these fortifications served as refuges and symbols of power. Their presence also reflected the social organization of the time, where collective defence prevailed against external threats, whether military or related to feudal tensions.
