Origin and history

The citadel of Corte was built in 1419 by Vincentello of Istria, Count and Viceroy of Corsica under the authority of Alphonse V of Aragon. This castle, built on a rocky spur between Bastia and Ajaccio, served as a military base against the Republic of Genoa. Between 1421 and 1434 Vincentello installed the seat of his government there, marking a period of Corsican autonomy under Aragonese rule. The site was protected by a crenellated wall and three towers, symbolizing its strategic role in the conflicts between Genoa and Aragon.

In the 18th century, the citadel became a symbol of Corsican resistance under Pascal Paoli, who made it the capital of his independent government. After the defeat of Ponte-Novo in 1769 against the troops of Louis XV, Corsica passed under French domination. The Count of Vaux then ordered the expansion of fortifications according to the principles of Vauban, the only Corsican citadel built within the land. The Padua barracks, completed in 1776, marked this military transformation, before the site became a museum in 1984.

Between 1962 and 1983, the citadel housed the foreign Legion's training group, before it was opened to the public. Today, it hosts the Museum of Corsica, FRACORSE, a scientific centre and a tourist hub, while offering panoramic views of the Restonica and Tavignano valleys. In 2015, the site was occupied by independent activists during a hunger strike, recalling its symbolic importance in Corsican political history.

Ranked a historic monument in 1977, the citadel incorporates elements from the 15th century (original castle) and the 18th century (fortified enclosure). Its architecture reflects the strategic evolutions of Corsica, from the medieval conflicts between Genoa and Aragon to the paolist resistance, then to its contemporary role as a place of memory and culture. The cachots built by Paoli and the tanks of the Office de Saint-Georges testify to its varied use over the centuries.
