Origin and history
The Sainte-Marthe Clinic, located in Angoulême, is a historical monument whose most remarkable elements date back to the second half of the seventeenth century. The entrance door to the garden, drawn in a full arch, consists of ground elements decorated with plant motifs. It is surmounted by a volute pediment housing a shield with erased coat of arms, itself bent on a second semicircular pediment adorned with a draped urn. This architectural ensemble, supported by reversed consoles, integrates into a stone balustrade punctuated with spheres at the ends.
The margin of a well, located in front of this composition, is covered by a small dome carried by three doric columns. These elements, listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 4 March 1925, illustrate the craftsmanship and aesthetic codes of the seventeenth century. Their preservation bears witness to the heritage importance attached to this site, now owned by an association.
The exact address, 7 rue François I in Angoulême, places the monument in a historical district of the city. The accuracy of its location, assessed as satisfactory (note 7/10), makes it possible to envisage an in-depth architectural visit or study. Available photographs, such as those of Rosier under Creative Commons license, document his current state and ornamental details.
