Origin and history
La Closerie Falbala is a major artistic creation by Jean Dubuffet, located in Périgny, Val-de-Marne. This hybrid monument, both architectural and sculptural, extends over 1,610 m2 and culminates at 8 meters high. Made between 1971 and 1973 in epoxy and polyurethane-painted concrete, it consists of a fence (wall of white enclosure adorned with black lines) and a central Villa Falbala, home to the logological Cabinet. The latter, conceived between 1967 and 1969 as a place of meditation, is decorated with 24 carved panels with red, blue and black scripts. The ensemble, transferred to the Dubuffet Foundation in 1973, illustrates the artist's dream world.
Villa Falbala, built of laminated resin on a metal frame, is surrounded by a enclosed garden intended to isolate. The exterior walls, entirely white with black patterns, contrast with the interior with the abstract coloured drawings. Ranked a historic monument in 1998 (including the guardian's house and the floors), the site is visited by appointment, off Mondays, Wednesdays and public holidays. Its approximate address, 9001 Chemin du Moulin à Périgny, makes it a discreet but emblematic place of raw art in Île-de-France.
Jean Dubuffet, painter and sculptor, fully funded and designed this project on his own soil. The Closerie Falbala embodies her vision of an artistic and contemplative space, where architecture, sculpture and painting merge. Innovative materials for the era (epoxy, polyurethane) and organic forms reflect its rejection of traditional aesthetic conventions. Today managed by the Dubuffet Foundation, the site remains a unique testimony of its monumental work, accessible under conditions to preserve its integrity.
