Dryer (Box A 686): Order of 30 September 1994
Origin and history
The Cognin-les-Georges nut dryer, also known as the La Tour dryer, is an 18th-century emblematic building located in the Isère department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This building, classified as a historical monument by decree of 30 September 1994, illustrates the architectural adaptation specific to the nut-producing regions. Its height structure, consisting of openwork floors and walls, allowed optimum air circulation to dry the nuts while protecting them from weather, sun and birds.
This dryer, unique of its kind classified in Isère, is distinguished by its exceptional structure dating from 1776, making it the oldest in the region. It was organized into three levels: a ground floor shed, a drying space for nuts for sale on the first floor, and a second level for scrap nuts, called "cacarots". Typical of the Isère valley between Grenoble and Romans-sur-Isère, this monument bears witness to the historical importance of the Grenoble nut culture in this area.
The dryer is located at 122 de l' impasse de la Tour, in a private property in Cognin-les-Georges. Although not permanently open to the public, one-off visits are organized by the tourist office of the community of communes, based in Saint Marcellin. This monument remains a strong symbol of the Dauphinian agricultural and architectural heritage, linked to the production of nuts, a major economic activity of the region for centuries.
Its classification as a historic monument in 1994 highlights its heritage value and its role as a witness to a traditional Dauphiné activity. The area, covered with walnut trees, was a key production centre for Grenoble nuts, now protected by a Controlled Origin (AOC) designation.
