17th and 18th century parts of the Collège Beauséjour, including the building on rue Michelet, including the large gate and staircase, the building facing the courtyard and the bridge connecting them: inscription by decree of 20 February 1947

Origin and history

The Collège Beauséjour, located in Narbonne, is the result of the meeting of three distinct architectural ensembles: the former Saint-Félix hotel, the former convent of Notre-Dame, and the former Logis de l'Ange. These buildings, partially remodeled, now house classes, a modern chapel and educational buildings. The hotel Saint-Félix, mentioned in 1576 as a "large house", is distinguished by its central front-body facade, decorated with a gate in the middle of the hangar, a framed window on the first floor, and another surmounted by a triangular pediment on the second.

In the heart of the hotel, a monumental staircase develops on three straight flights, supported by low arches and richly decorated hanging keys. This staircase, a central element of the building body on rue Michelet, is connected to another building by a bridge. The preserved parts of the 17th and 18th centuries, including the gate and stairway, were classified as Historic Monument by order of 20 February 1947. Educational spaces (classes, dormitories) occupy the place of the former convent and outbuildings of the house of the Angel.

The chapel, built north on the street, is a modern addition, just like the buildings erected on the old courtyards. The whole, now owned by a private company, illustrates the architectural and functional evolution of a place originally dedicated to accommodation and religion, transformed into a school. The accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), with an official address at 15 rue Michelet in Narbonne.
