Origin and history
The college of Treignac originated in a building built between 1665 and 1704, as evidenced by the dates engraved on its entrance gate. Originally, the building probably housed a religious or educational institution, although its original vocation was not explicitly documented. The chapel, integrated into the ensemble, was transformed into a saltpetrière during the French Revolution, a temporary use reflecting the upheavals of this period. In 1817, the building officially became a college, marking a turning point in its history towards a sustainable teaching function.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the building was in poor condition in 1824, requiring extensive restoration work carried out in 1826 and 1827. These interventions partially altered its structure, while the entrance door dating back to the second half of the seventeenth century was preserved. In the 20th century, the monument underwent new alterations: a wing was destroyed in the first half of the century, and the historic portal was abolished around 1960. Despite these changes, the façade and roof, protected by a registration order in 2011 (modifying a first protection of 1932), still bear witness to its architectural heritage.
Today, Treignac College remains an example of the successive renovations of old buildings, adapted to the changing needs of local communities. Its partial protection (facade and roof) underscores its historical interest, although some parts have disappeared. Property of the commune, it embodies both a religious, revolutionary and educational heritage, characteristic of small rural villages like Treignac en Corrèze.
