Origin and history
The Collège des Jésuites de Montauban was built from 1676, in a context after the Protestant city's submission to Louis XIII in 1629. Originally designed as a dwelling for the Intendants, it was quickly transformed into a college after authorization in 1677. The building, probably erected on the remains of the old fortifications, includes vaulted rooms and a rectangular courtyard framed by wings and towers.
After the dissolution of the Society of Jesus in 1761, the college passed under the administration of the bishop of Montauban. Its architecture combines defensive elements (tours, vestiges of ramparts) and educational elements (large staircases, arcade galleries). The courtyard retains a black and white pebble pavement, while the north wing includes a bell tower and a more recent church.
Ranked Historic Monument in 1972 for its facades and roofs, the college illustrates Jesuit influence in an area marked by religious tensions. Its rectangular plan, arcades and subsequent changes reflect a continuous occupation, despite political and religious changes.
Today owned by the commune, the site preserves traces of its educational and military past, with remains of external passages and a central location in Montauban (rue du Collège).
