Origin and history

The chapel of the Collège Buvignier, also known as the Chapel Saint-Nicolas, is a desacralized chapel located in Verdun, in the department of the Meuse (Great East region). Built between 1731 and 1735 by Charles-François d'Hallencourt, it was originally joined to the Jesuit college founded in 1570 by Bishop Nicolas Psalm. The building served the offices of the Jesuit brothers and housed the tomb of the heart of Nicholas Psalm until 1990, when he was transferred to the Cathedral of Verdun.

His name comes from the early church linked to St. Nicholas' Hospital in Graverie. The chapel illustrates 17th-century religious architecture and the Lorrain tradition of church halls, where nave and collateral have the same height. The Jesuit architect René Maugorin was the architect. The college, destroyed except the chapel, was rebuilt between 1888 and 1890 by the architect Chenevier.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 2 July 1921, the chapel is now owned by the municipality of Verdun. Its limestone-cut stone construction and slate cover reflect the local techniques of the era. The site retains a major heritage value, linked to the religious and educational history of the city.
