Origin and history

The Jesuit College of Bourges, founded in 1573, was a Catholic school for boys run by the Jesuits until 1764. The current building, built around 1615 according to the plans of Jesuit Étienne Martellange, is located in the historic heart of the city. It served as both a college and seminar for theological students. Thanks to the gifts of the prince of Condé, the large house corps was completed between 1625 and 1635, while the south wing was added in 1637 to enlarge the boarding school.

After the Jesuits were expelled in 1764, the college changed its name and direction several times over the centuries. He became a central school in 1795, an imperial high school in 1803, then a Alain-Fournier high school in 1937, before moving in 1966. Today, the buildings house the École nationale supérieure d'art de Bourges and have been partially listed as historical monuments since 2004.

The buildings, in keeping with Jesuit traditions, bear witness to their role in religious renewal and teaching in Bourges. Famous students include the Grand Condé, Louis Bourdaloue, and Paul-Adrien Bourdaloue. The sober and classical architecture reflects the importance of the institution in the educational and religious history of the region.
