Origin and history

The Collège Notre-Dame de Mehun-sur-Yèvre, located between the castle and the old town, was built from the 11th century by reusing elements of the Roman castrum and building on local fortifications. Its architecture combines a rare Romanesque stroll in the Centre-Val de Loire region and a flamboyant Gothic chapel added in 1466, reflecting Burgundy and Tourangelle influences. The 12th century bell tower, integrated with the walls, also served as a passage between the high and low city, while the unaxed choir, with radiant chapels, was one of the first French examples of this plan.

The history of the monument is marked by partial destruction: looting by the Huguenots in 1562, fire of 1910 ravaging the nave and bell tower, and filling of the crypt in 1828. The college, dependent on the bishopric of Bourges, also illustrates the local religious tensions, as evidenced by the traces of the wars of Religion. Its furniture, including a 15th century relic cabinet and art nouveau baptismal fonts, as well as its modern stained glass windows, reveal layers of restoration and adaptations.

Ranked as early as 1840, the collegiate preserved remarkable elements such as the modillons of the bell tower, including a paschal lamb inscribed in a Greek cross (XII century), or the southern seigneurial chapel founded by Regnault Thierry, the king's surgeon. Its atypical plan — unique nave without transept — and its integration into the ramparts make it a key witness to medieval religious architecture in Berry, between Romanesque heritage and Gothic innovations.

The archaeological sources underline its role in urban organization: separating high and low town, it served as a place of passage and worship, while its 19th century sacristy and its missing decorations (renaissance carpentry, stalls) evoke a rich liturgical life. The successive restorations, although destructive for some original decorations, allowed its preservation until today.
