Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Sylvain de Levroux, located in the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a major religious building built in the 13th century. Nicknamed the "Little Cathedral of Berry", it is distinguished by its refined Gothic style, although its porch is of Romanesque origin. The church is dedicated to Saint Sylvain, a figure associated with the evangelization of Levroux. Its architecture impresses with its dimensions: 55 meters in length, a nave with sexpartite vaults, and a south tower culminating at 50 meters. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1840, it underwent major restorations, notably between 2009 and 2011 for its roofs and frames.

The history of the college is marked by remarkable elements, such as the condemnation of access to its crypt before 1580 or the damage suffered during the wars of Religion, especially on its sculpted eardrum representing the Last Judgment. The Romanesque portal, decorated with 21 figures, once served as an exclusive entry for lepers. Inside, the organ, whose buffet dates back to 1502, is one of the oldest in France. Ranked in 1908, it has been rebuilt several times, including a major restoration in 1978 by Jean-Loup Boisseau, giving the instrument a classic 17th century French aesthetic.

The college historically depended on the archdiocese of Bourges and the local parish. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic influences, with an apse, side chapels, and two twin towers with octagonal arrows. The faux triforium of the nave, although not functional, contributes to an impression of dizzying height. The stained glass windows, sculptures and organs make it an exceptional place of heritage, bearing witness to the religious and cultural importance of Levroux in the Middle Ages.

According to local tradition, St.Martin came to Levroux, destroying a pagan temple and healing the local lord of leprosy. This legend reinforces the link between the building and the Christian history of the region. Today, the college remains a symbol of the rich medieval past of Berry, attracting visitors and researchers for its architecture, historic organ and carved decorations.

The dimensions of the collegiate church — 55 metres long, 28 metres wide, and 18 metres under vault — make it a visible landmark several kilometres away. Its main portal, inspired by that of Bourges Cathedral, and its Romanesque portal, the starting point of the Gothic construction, illustrate the stylistic evolution of the building. The restoration campaigns, such as that of Joseph Merklin in 1868 or Jean-Loup Boisseau in 1978, preserved this jewel of French religious heritage.
