Origin and history
The medieval attic of Colmar, also known as Weinhof, is a historic monument located in the heart of the city, at 12-16 rue des Marchands. Built in the 14th century, this imposing building initially covered about 1,000 m2 and belonged to the sisters of the Unterlinden convent. He played an essential role in storing cereals for the inhabitants of Colmar, thus ensuring a vital food reserve for the community.
In 1602, the attic became the property of the town of Colmar and partially changed its function. It was then used as a warehouse for fire lances, marking an evolution in its use while maintaining its logistical importance. The remaining portions of the building, including its basement, were listed as historic monuments on July 19, 1991, recognizing its heritage value.
The building is distinguished by its medieval architecture and its location in an inner courtyard, typical of the urban buildings of the time. Today, there remains a testimony of Colmar's economic and social organization in the Middle Ages, while illustrating the functional adaptations of monuments over the centuries. Its inscription as a historical monument protects its remains, although its precise location is sometimes subject to approximations according to the sources.
