Cemetery Cross (Box B 1010): Registration by Order of 11 September 1987
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Colombe-la-Fosse is an emblematic monument located in the village of the same name, in the department of the Aube, in the Grand Est region. This type of cross, often erected near the burial grounds, served both as a spiritual landmark and as a symbol of the Christian faith for the inhabitants. Its designation as historic monuments in 1987 reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this local heritage.
In the Champagne-Ardenne countryside, the cemetery crosses played a central role in community life. They marked the entrance of sacred spaces and reminded the faithful of their belonging to a parish. In modern times, these monuments were often the gathering point for religious ceremonies and collective gatherings.
Their presence also reflected the social organization around the Church, a pillar of rural life before the Industrial Revolution.
