Origin and history

The dovecoier de Maros is a monument in the commune of Plouagat, Brittany. Although its time of construction is not specified in the available sources, this type of building was generally associated, in this region, with seigneurial estates or farms of importance. Doves served both as a symbol of prestige for their owners and as a food reserve, pigeons being a source of meat and fertilizer.

In Brittany, dovecotes were often integrated into larger architectural ensembles, such as manor houses or farms. Their presence reflected a hierarchical social organization, where the possession of a dovecote was sometimes reserved for the nobility or the Earth bourgeoisie. In Plouagat, as in other Breton communes, these buildings demonstrate a rural heritage marked by agriculture and feudal or post-feudal structures.
