Origin and history
The Blanchard column is a historical monument located in the forest of Guînes, in the department of Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it has been classified as a historic monument since 19 April 1972. Its exact location is indicated as being in the Guînes forest, with an approximate location noted as "passible" (level 5 on a scale of 10).
This type of column, typical of the commemorative or symbolic architecture of the late eighteenth century, often fits into a context of valorisation of territories or celebration of local events. At that time, the Hauts-de-France region, then integrated into the Kingdom of France, was marked by a rural economy and activities related to agriculture, forestry and trade. Monuments of this kind could serve as a landmark or symbol for local communities, although their exact function is not always documented.
