Origin and history
The commemorative column of Sèvremoine, located at the intersection of two departmental roads, was built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Its exact location corresponds to the very place where, in 1793, one of the significant mass raisings of the Salesian revolt took place. This historic monument, whose first stone was laid on 19 September 1826, was initiated by the Marquis de la Bretsche, then chestnut du Couboureau.
The aim of this column was to perpetuate the memory of a key episode of the Vendée wars, a counter-revolutionary insurgency movement that opposed local populations to Republican troops. The Marquis de la Bretsche, as sponsor, wanted to anchor in the landscape a collective memory linked to this violent and founding event for the region. The column, which has been fully protected since a decree of 5 July 2012, remains an architectural and symbolic testimony of this troubled period.
Originally located near Torfu (Maine-et-Loire), the column is now attached to the municipality of Sèvremoine, in the Pays de la Loire. Its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its commemorative role and for its anchoring in local history. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its status as a historical and cultural landmark for the region.
