Former chapel, currently parish church of Villedieu; hexagonal tower; preserved elements of the original housing body (pignons and partial elevation in strips of wood) (Case C 45, 39): inscription by order of 1 September 1992

Origin and history

The Commanderie de Villedieu-la-Montagne is a building located in the commune of Haucourt in the Seine-Maritime region of Normandy. Founded at the end of the 12th century, it illustrates medieval architecture linked to the religious-military orders of the period. This type of monument often served as a place of life, prayer and land management for local communities, while playing a strategic role in feudal organization.

In the 15th century, the original mansion was demolished and replaced by a farm, marking a transformation of its use into agricultural activities. The facade was redone in bricks in the 20th century, reflecting more modern architectural adaptations. Since 1 September 1992, the commandory has been listed as a historical monument, protecting key elements such as the old chapel, a hexagonal tower and the remains of the wooden housing body.

The building, built of bricks and stones, bears witness to the architectural and functional evolutions over centuries. Today, it combines communal and private property, with parts like the parish church of Villedieu still in use. Its inscription in the heritage underscores its historical and cultural importance for the Seine-Maritime and Normandy.
