Origin and history

Vendôme's house, built in the first half of the 19th century (probably between 1830 and 1848), bears witness to the rise of companionship in France. Its modest but symbolic architecture, including the gistard-linked skylight and tenaille-forming crooch, reflects the craft techniques of the time. The half-wood assemblage and the simplicity of the shapes underline the know-how of the carpenters' companions, while the cradles of the skylight house significant inscriptions and companion symbols.

The voids of the cradles bear the initials U.V.G.T., associated with the rite of the companions of the Devoir (or Soubisus), as well as the maxim "God protects the arts", revealing the spiritual and professional values of companionship. These decorative elements, although discreet, confirm the home's membership in a codified artisanal tradition, where each architectural detail had an initiatory meaning. The facade and roof, protected since 1999, make it a rare preserved example of this workers' heritage in the Centre-Val de Loire.

Located on 16 rue des Quatre-Huyes, this house is located in a historic area of Vendôme, a city marked by a rich artisanal and commercial past. His inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines his importance as a material testimony of companion practices, often transmitted orally. The location, although approximate (level 6/10 depending on the sources), allows us to consider its integration into a heritage path dedicated to the social and technical history of the region.
