Origin and history
The home of the companion of duty Albert Fisseau, located in Vendôme, was built in 1948 in a district ravaged by the bombings of 1940. This project is part of a period of post-Second World War reconstruction, where artisanal know-how, especially those of companions, played a key role in the revitalization of French cities. The Companion skylight, an emblematic element of the building, is distinguished by its guarded link and its crooked link forming a tenaille, a particularly neat bill and of imposing dimensions. It overlooks the twin bays of the facade, illustrating the technical and aesthetic excellence of the companions of duty.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this house embodies both an architectural heritage and a symbol of resilience. The official protection, which took place by order of 27 May 1999, specifically concerns the facade on the street and the roof, highlighting their historical and artistic value. Albert Fisseau, the project manager, left a lasting impression, mixing companionship tradition and reconstructive modernity. The choice of the suburb of Saint Lubin as a location also reflects a desire to anchor in a historical area, while offering a new identity to a war-stricken space.
The building is part of the broader movement of companion houses, where each architectural detail tells a history of knowledge transmission. The skylight, in particular, is a coded language unique to companions, where geometric shapes and assemblages reveal belonging to a community and a level of mastery. In Vendôme, this achievement also bears witness to the importance of the building trades in the reconstruction of France, where handicrafts became a vector of memory and renewal.
