Gallo-Roman thermal complex (vestiges) (Case AD 141): entry by order of 31 July 1986

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman thermal complex of Montélimar is a historical monument located in the city of Montélimar, in the department of Drôme (26), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This site, dated from the Gallo-Roman period, illustrates the architectural and cultural heritage left by the Romans in this region. The remains, though partial, allow to imagine the importance of the thermal baths in the social and hygienic life of the time.

Gallo-Roman thermal baths were central places in ancient cities, serving both as areas of relaxation, sociability and hygiene. In Montélimar, as in other cities of Roman Gaul, these installations reflected the Romanized way of life, integrating practices from Rome while adapting to local specificities. Their presence is evidence of organized urbanization and some prosperity during this period.

The site was recognized as a Historic Monument and its remains were protected by a registration order on 31 July 1986. This protection covers the thermal unit, identified under the cadastral reference AD 141. Although the practical information on visits is not detailed in the available sources, its status as a listed monument underscores its heritage and archaeological importance.
