Origin and history

Scherwiller's guard corps is a historical monument located in the Alsatian municipality of Scherwiller, in the department of Bas-Rhin. Ranked in 1924, this versatile building has had several uses over the centuries. Although documents dated 1670, it bears the inscription 1700 and a cooper emblem, suggesting an origin related to that corporation before becoming a public place.

According to the archives, the building was first used as a town hall and then school for girls from 1853. After 1861, he was transformed into a guard, with a dwelling upstairs for the communal apparter. Since 1973, its ground floor has been home to the Scherwiller Tourist Office, marking its continuous adaptation to the needs of the community.

The architecture and successive functions of the building reflect the administrative and social evolution of Scherwiller, typical of the small Alsatian communes. Its ranking in 1924 underscores its heritage importance, linked to its multifunctional history and its central role in local life.
