Origin and history
The Coudepont battery, built on the island of Aix in the 17th century, is one of the fortifications commissioned by Colbert to secure the port of Rochefort. The work, begun in 1681, was entrusted to military engineer Vauban, famous for his defensive works. This monument, rectangular in shape, features an entrance to the south, braces on its facades and a vaulted stone interior. A drawbridge used to provide access, strengthening its strategic role in maritime protection.
The battery architecture reflects Vauban's defensive principles, with murderers and structures designed to withstand assaults. Its location at the eastern tip of Aix Island made it a key point for controlling access to the Rochefort arsenal. Joined the Historical Monuments in 1948, it shows the military importance of the region under Louis XIV and the ingenuity of the coastal fortifications of the time.
Today, the Coudepont battery remains an emblematic vestige of French military history, illustrating the genius of Vauban and the strategic role of the island of Aix in defending the Atlantic coast. Its state of conservation and location make it a remarkable heritage site, although its current access and uses are not specified in available sources.
