Origin and history

The Crédit municipal de Paris (CMP), formerly Mont-de-piété, is the capital's oldest financial institution. Founded in 1637 by Théophraste Renaudot on the Île de la Cité, it was closed in 1644 before being restored in 1777 by Louis XVI, on the proposal of police lieutenant Lenoir. Located in the Marais, he occupied a hotel built on an old convent, which was erected on the walls of Philippe Auguste, and remains of which are still visible. Its initial objective was to combat wear and tear by offering pawn loans at affordable rates.

In the 19th century, Napoleon granted him a monopoly on pawn loans, and the institution expanded with new branches. In the 20th century, it moved to a popular bank, becoming the Crédit municipal de Paris in 1918. In 1992, the City of Paris became its sole shareholder. The building preserves historical features, such as the vantals of the entrance gate, classified as historic monuments in 1926, and remains of the Nouvion Hotel, rediscovered in 1883.

The CMP now combines banking activities (via CMP Bank) and traditional services: pawn loans, auctions, and expertise in art objects. Since 2008, he has also offered personal microcredits in Île-de-France. Its emblem, a griffon, dates back to the 15th century Italian Monte di Pietà, symbolizing the protection of the goods engaged. The institution has been actively involved in the Parisian cultural patronage since 2011, supporting museums and festivals.

The current site, at 55 rue des Francs-Bourgeois, houses a sales room and exhibition spaces. Traces of the medieval enclosure of Philippe Auguste and the Hotel de Nouvion are visible there, recalling its historic anchor. The CMP remains a key player in the Parisian social economy, combining heritage and modernity.

Its history reflects the economic and social developments in Paris, moving from a charitable institution against usury to a public banking institution. The archives and exhibitions, as the story of Ma Aunt is amazing (2011), testify to her central role in the lives of Parisians, from popular classes to art collectors.
