Origin and history
La Croix aux Morts de Ploërmel is a carved granite cross, dated from the 15th or 16th centuries, located on the departmental road 772, at the crossing of the so-called La Croix florée. This monument, today deprived of its original barrel, rests on a stone base. Its summit features a high-relief setting representing a Christ on the cross and the IHS monogram, a Christian symbol that was common at that time. A partial inscription, P. ROULIN 16.., suggests a renovation or relocation in the seventeenth century, although its exact date and context remain unclear.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments on 30 May 1927, under the reference Crosse sous Croix aux Morts (ZM 134). Its current location, close to the Route de Guer (address: 26 La Croix Fleurie), makes it a landmark of Breton religious heritage. The monument, although devoid of its barrel, retains historical and artistic value, illustrating the funeral and devotional practices of the 15th-XVIth centuries in Brittany.
From an architectural point of view, the Cross to the Dead is distinguished by its monolithism and sculptures, typical of the Breton crosses of this period. Its small stone base, anchored in a rural environment, recalls the role of these monuments as spiritual and memorial landmarks along the roads. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its local importance, without further specifying its sponsor or the circumstances of its creation.
The location of the cross, noted as fair (level 5/10) in the databases, indicates relative geographical impreciseness. Its Insee code (56165) officially links it to the commune of Ploërmel, in Morbihan, administrative region of Brittany. No information is available on its current accessibility or any associated services (visits, accommodation).
