Origin and history
La croix armoriée de Kério is located near the place called Kerrio, in the commune of Kervignac, in the Morbihan department of Brittany. Built of granite, it consists of a chamfered square base, a chamfered square barrel, and a cubic node supporting a hexagonal or octagonal cross-sectional crossover depending on the sources. This node carries shields on its eastern and western faces, representing unidentified weapons, while the crusillon bears bas-reliefs of Christ and the Virgin.
The cross is located on a slope along the ancient road of Hennebont in Kervignac, near an ancient noble place called Kerrio. Although its exact origin remains unknown, it is dated from the 16th century and associated with an unidentified noble family, whose coats of arms appear at the base of the crusillon. There is no evidence linking this family to the lords of the nearby Kerrio mansion. The base of the cross, now partially masked by vegetation, makes its observation difficult.
Registered as a historical monument since March 20, 1934, this cross illustrates Breton Christian Renaissance architecture. Its spread shields, combining eagles, leopards and patted crosses, as well as its religious representations, make it a local artistic and historical witness. The exact height of the monument remains approximate, and its current condition depends on its location at the roadside, exposed to the weather and surrounding vegetation.
