Cemetery Cross: Registration by Order of 26 January 1927

Origin and history

La Croix du Cemetery de Sainte-Marie-Lapanouze is a historical monument located in the Corrèze department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is distinguished by its composite structure: a modern cross overtaking a very old base, which initially served as altar. This mixture of epochs testifies to the re-use of heritage elements throughout the centuries, a practice common in French rural areas.

The ancient base, probably linked to local religious or funeral practices, illustrates the importance of sacred monuments in the organization of village communities. Cemetery crosses, often erected at the entrances or the centre of funeral spaces, marked a symbolic boundary between the world of the living and that of the dead. Their presence also reflected the centrality of the Christian faith in everyday life, especially in regions such as Limousin, where the Church played a major social and cultural role.

The listing of the Cemetery Cross in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 26 January 1927 underlines its heritage value. This official protection, relatively early for a monument of this nature, indicates a desire to preserve modest but representative elements of rural heritage. The location in Sainte-Marie-Lapanouze, a small town, reinforces the idea that these monuments, although discreet, were strong identifiers for the inhabitants.

Today, the Cemetery Cross remains a material testimony of local history, although its state of conservation and geographical accuracy are considered poor (level 5 out of 10). The Creative Commons license associated with his photo suggests a contemporary interest in his documentation, despite limited information about his past use or possible restorations. Its status as communal property confirms its anchor in the public life of the village.
