Origin and history

The cross at the bottom of the village of Germéfontaine is a monumental cross erected during the first half of the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its central location, at the intersection of departmental road 20, rue du Frêne and rue du Prince-Albert, in the Doubs department. This monument, typical of the cross of paths or intersections of that time, surmounts a niche and is located in the immediate vicinity of a fountain-wash, emphasizing its role both religious and practical in community life.

The cross was first listed as historical monuments in 1990, before being classified on 31 August 1992, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Property of the municipality of Germéfontaine, it illustrates the rural Christian architecture of Franche-Comté and bears witness to devotional practices and public amenities of the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. Its state of conservation and its precise location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the databases, make it a significant element of local heritage.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, specify that the cross is referenced under the code Insee 25268 for the municipality, in the former Franche-Comté region (now Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). No information is provided on any sponsors, craftsmen or specific historical events related to its construction. Its classification refers specifically to the "Croix du XVIe siècle du bas du village, sur la place", without mention of cadastre, indicating its membership in the public domain.
