Stone Cross: inscription by decree of 9 November 1926

Origin and history

La Croix de Dezize-lès-Maranges is a cross of the road in the department of Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is located at the edge of the communes of Dezize-lès-Maranges and Sampigny-lès-Maranges, integrated into a recess of a probably posterior building. This stone cross carries a carved Christ and rests on a barrel partially embedded in a wall.

Its base includes a partially erased inscription, evoking a dedication and a request for prayers. Ranked a historical monument by decree of 9 November 1926, this cross is a typical example of the cross of paths, often erected at crossroads or at village entrances to mark a place of devotion or assembly. These monuments reflect the popular piety and religious organization of rural communities in Burgundy, where collective processions and prayers rhythmized local life.

Their presence also demonstrates the importance of Christian symbols in public space before modern secularization.
