Origin and history

La Croix en pierre de Jaulges is a cross of road situated in the eponymous village, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 15th century, it stands on the central square, marking a historical and religious landmark for the local community. Its architecture combines a square base, a Gothic column and a summital cross, reflecting the late medieval artistic style.

The cross is decorated with sculptures in bas-relief, including four statues very eroded at the corners of the column, representing the four evangelists. Above, near the capital, two better preserved bas-reliefs illustrate Saint Martin sharing his coat, an emblematic episode of Christian charity. These artistic elements underline its role both decorative and didactic in public space.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 27 June 1925, the cross today belongs to the municipality of Jaulges. Its registration bears witness to its heritage value, both for its seniority and for its relative conservation status. Although its geographical accuracy is considered "passable" (level 5/10), it remains a tangible symbol of local religious and architectural heritage.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as a protected monument and its approximate location at 45 Grande Rue. No additional information is provided on any sponsors, craftsmen or specific historical events related to its construction or past use.
