Origin and history
The monumental cross of Grignon is a Burgundy calvary located at the northeast corner of rue Franche and rue Jean-Dampt, in the Côte-d'Or department. It is distinguished by its pedestal and octagonal, as well as by a double-sided sculpted face representing Christ and the Virgin. Contiguous to a wall, it limits the visibility of its rear face, and the images of the early twentieth century show that the face visible at the crossroads was once that of Christ, whereas today it is that of the Virgin.
This cross was listed as historical monuments on May 29, 2020. It belongs to the commune of Grignon and is a typical example of Burgundy calvaries, often erected as symbols of devotion or repentance. These monuments played an important role in the religious and social life of the villages, serving as gathering points or spiritual landmarks for the inhabitants.
The precise location of the cross is documented in the Merimée base, with an approximate address from GPS coordinates: 2 Rue Jean Dampt, 21150 Grignon. Its state of conservation and its partial visibility underscore the importance of its preservation, particularly because of its recent designation as a national historic heritage.
