Hospital Cross: Registration by Order of 17 June 1926

Origin and history

La croix hosannière de La Madeleine-sur-Loing is a cemetery cross located in the cemetery of this French commune. This type of monument, often associated with religious processions, served as a gathering point or stop at liturgical ceremonies, especially during Easter holidays. Its name "hosannière" refers to the songs of Hosanna intonated during these processes.

The cross is located in the Seine-et-Marne department, in the Île-de-France region. It was listed as historic monuments by order of 17 June 1926, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality, it is located precisely in the enclosure of the cemetery, at the address indicated in the base Mérimée. No further information is available on its exact origin, its sponsors or the artisans who participated in its realization.

The hosannière crosses, which were widespread in several regions of France, often marked places of worship or stages in processional paths. Their presence reflected the importance of collective religious practices in the lives of rural or urban communities, especially between the Middle Ages and the modern era. These monuments, though discreet, played a strong symbolic role in the spatial and spiritual organization of parishes.
