Origin and history
The 16th century cross, located west of the church of Charmoilles, in Rolampont, is a historical monument inscribed by ministerial decree in 1926. This type of religious church, typical of the French countryside, bears witness to popular piety and funeral or commemorative architecture of the Renaissance. Its location near a church suggests a role in processions or as a spiritual landmark for the local community.
In the 16th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region (now part of the Great East) was marked by a rural economy dominated by agriculture, viticulture and artisanal activities. The monumental crosses, often erected near churches or paths, served as gathering points for religious ceremonies or collective prayers. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the social and territorial organization of villages, where these monuments played a symbolic and practical role, as pillars or places of memory.
