Old Cross (Case AA 147): Registration by Order of 8 June 1925
Origin and history
The ancient cross of Saint Vincent-sur-Oust is a cemetery cross erected in the 16th century, originally located in the enclosure of the cemetery of the commune. After the demolition of the old church, it was moved to the town hall square in the heart of the town. This monument is distinguished by its octagonal prismatic barrel, resting on a square base becoming octagonal with penetrations. The main faces represent Christ and the Virgin, while characters in console support the arms of the cross, surmounted by a gable decorated with hooks.
The cross was listed as historic monuments on June 8, 1925, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. Owned by the municipality, it bears witness to the Breton Christian architecture of the Renaissance and the importance of the cemetery crosses in the religious and social life of the villages of the time. Its state of conservation and its current location, Place de la Mairie, make it a central element of the local heritage.
According to available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, this cross illustrates the funeral and artistic traditions of Morbihan in the 16th century. His style, marked by sculptural details like the gable hooks, reflects the late Gothic influences still present at this time. The accuracy of its location is assessed as very satisfactory (note 8/10), and its official address is recorded in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 56239, attached to the commune of Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust.
