Origin and history
The cross of Aromas is a monumental cross erected in stone, located on the square of the church of Saint-André, in the commune of Aromas (Jura, Burgundy-Franche-Comté). Dated from the 15th century (or potentially from the 14th according to some sources), it embodies a medieval religious heritage typical of the region. Its square base, its octagonal barrel and its crusillon adorned with flowers and vegetal motifs make it a remarkable example of funeral and devotional art of the time.
The cross has been classified as historic monuments since November 24, 1906, recognizing its heritage value. It features major iconographic representations: a cross Christ on one side, a Child Virgin on the other side, and statues of St Peter and St Andrew under the arms of the crusillon. These elements emphasize its role both spiritual and artistic in the local community, reflecting the beliefs and crafts of the late Middle Ages.
Owned by the municipality of Aromas, the cross stands at 4 Place Jean Buffavand, in front of the church. Its state of conservation and location make it a point of interest for the study of Christian monuments in Jura. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its historical importance, although certain details, such as the accuracy of its dating (XIVth or XVth century), remain subject to interpretation.
The 1906 classification is part of a period when France sought to preserve its medieval heritage, often threatened by time or urban transformation. The cross of Aromas, with its carved details and religious symbolism, illustrates this will to safeguard. Today, it remains a tangible testimony of the Christian and artistic heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
