Origin and history

La Croix de 1732 de Vaivre-et-Montoille is an emblematic monument located 500 meters northeast of the village, in the department of Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dated from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, it embodies the religious heritage of this period, marked by a strong Christian presence in the region. Its location, on the outskirts of the village, suggests a symbolic and practical role, as a point of reference or gathering for the inhabitants.

Classified as a historic monument since January 21, 1944, this cross illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of religious buildings under the Vichy regime, during which many monuments were protected for their heritage value. The mention of its classification in the official archives confirms its status as a key element of the local heritage, while stressing its integration into the historical landscape of the Haute-Saône.

Vaivre-et-Montoille, located in the western suburbs of Vesoul, was in modern times a mainly rural community, where crosses and other religious symbols played a central role in everyday life. These monuments often served as places of prayer, commemoration or delineation of parish territories. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the social and cultural organization of the villages of Franche-Comté.
