Cross of intersection: classification by decree of 27 December 1913

Origin and history

La Croix de intersection de La Crique is a monumental sandstone cross in the eponymous village of the Seine-Maritime department, Normandy. Dated from the 16th century, it embodies the local religious and artisanal heritage, typical of the Normandy countryside of that time. Its current location at the village crossroads is the result of a 19th century displacement, although the reasons for this change are not specified in the sources.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 27 December 1913, this cross is one of the three monumental crosses recorded in the village. Its classification reflects its heritage value, both architecturally and historically. The cross, as a prominent element of the landscape, reflects local religious practices and traditions, while serving as a visual landmark in the spatial organization of the village.

The village of La Crique, integrated with the Normandy region (formerly Haute-Normandie), is part of a territory marked by a rural and artisanal history. Crosses of crossroads, frequent in the French countryside, often played a role both spiritual (marking processes or places of prayer) and practical (limiting spaces or meeting points). Their presence illustrates the importance of religion in the daily life of village communities, especially in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.
