Crossroad at the entrance to the cemetery (cad. not cadastralized; public domain): registration by order of 2 July 1987

Origin and history

The cross of Sarrasquette, listed as a Historical Monument, stands in the hamlet of Bussunarits-Sarrasquette, a place frequented by pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela. It rests on a tapered square pillar, adorned with carved heads with engraved features in the corners. The arms of the cross bear Latin inscriptions: "INRI" above a Christ with raised arms, and "Ave spes unica" at the back. The ends of the arms are finished with half balls, adding an aesthetic and symbolic dimension to the whole.

This cross illustrates the importance of spiritual landmarks for Jacobites crossing the region. Its iconography, mixing Christian symbols and simple architectural elements, reflects a popular devotion rooted in the rural landscape. The monument, registered in the inventory in 1987, now belongs to the commune and bears witness to the religious heritage linked to the pilgrimage routes in New Aquitaine.

The location of the cross, although documented (approximate cadastral address and GPS), remains imprecise according to available sources, with a note of 5/10 for the reliability of its position. Its present state and accessibility are not detailed, but its status as communal property suggests local preservation. The photographs, licensed Creative Commons, show a sober monument, typical of medieval or post-medieval cross-roads, without superfluous ornaments.
