Origin and history

The Cross Servin is a cross of medieval road, located in the territory of the commune of Monts-sur-Orne, Normandy. Dating from the 13th century, it is carved in limestone and mounted on a cylindrical barrel, typical of the religious monuments of that time. It is located in the east of the delegated commune of Goulet, at the edge of the departmental road 771, linking Argentan and Ecouchés.

The cross was listed as historic monuments on February 28, 1955, recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune and remains an emblematic vestige of medieval Christian architecture in Lower Normandy. Its precise location, near 49 Rue du Hamel, makes it a historic landmark for travellers and residents.

The road crosses, like the Servin Cross, played an important role in the religious and social life of the Middle Ages. They often marked gathering places, crossroads or prayer points for pilgrims and travellers. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the organization of rural territories, where they served as spiritual and practical landmarks for local communities.
