La Croix de Châtenois is a historical monument located in Châtenois, in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. It is a stone village cross erected in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, more precisely in 1746. This type of monument, typical of the villages of the time, often served as a religious and social landmark for the inhabitants, marking a gathering place or a central point in community life.
The cross was classified as a Historic Monument by order of 23 July 1909, reflecting its heritage importance and historical value. It is located on Rue du Breuil, although approximate GPS coordinates are also located near Rue du Paradis. The accuracy of its location is considered fair, which may reflect minor uncertainties in archives or cartographic records.
Village crosses, such as that of Châtenois, were often erected for religious, commemorative or symbolic reasons. In the 18th century, in rural areas such as Lorraine, these monuments played a role in structuring public space and in the spiritual life of communities. Their presence could also be linked to local events, such as epidemics, wars or wishes expressed by the inhabitants.
Today, the Châtenois Cross remains a material testimony of local history and crafts of the time. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments ensures its preservation and allows visitors to discover a characteristic element of the rural heritage of Lorraine. Available data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, confirm its status and historical interest.
