16th Century Road Cross: Order of 21 March 1910

Origin and history

The road cross of Arlanc, classified Historic Monument by decree of 21 March 1910, dates from the 16th century. It is distinguished by its sculpted representations: Christ on the cross on one side, and the Virgin carrying the Child Jesus on the other. The ends of the cross are decorated with flowered motifs, while arms are supported in the corners. These stylistic elements are characteristic of Renaissance religious art in Auvergne.

This cross is mentioned on the cadastre of 1836 at its present location, confirming its historical anchoring in the Arlanc landscape. Accidentally damaged in 1988, it was restored and restored the following year in 1989. Owned by the commune, it bears witness to popular piety and local handicrafts of the sixteenth century, while marking a landmark in the communal territory.

The road crosses, like Arlanc's, played a role both religious and social in the Auvergne countryside. They served as places of devotion, gathering points for processions, and landmarks for travellers. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of rural communities, where the Church rhythmized daily life and calendar holidays.
