16th century road cross near the bridge of Bief, in the centre of the village: by order of 10 June 1927

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de Bief is a stone cross erected in 1514 in the heart of the village of Bief in the Doubs department. It is at the crossroads of two paths, on the Place de la Croix, at the crossing of the Terres de Chaux road and the Route départementale 294. This strategic location, in the centre of the village, makes it a historical and religious landmark for the local community.

The cross has been classified as historical monuments since 10 June 1927. It rests on a square base with each side carved in the shape of a gable. The cask, of octagonal plan, is typical of architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries, with slices cut that sever into ground bases. A moulded ring connects the barrel to the cross itself, whose arms, also octagonal, are decorated with small carved lamp asses, originally intended to support statuettes now missing.

On the front side of the cross, a Christ dominates the whole, his head surmounted by a finely worked dais. At the back, a Virgin with the Child sits on a cul-de-lamp, placed higher than the other carved elements. The three arms of the cross end with florets composed of hooks, without a central pattern. According to Julien Polti, chief architect of the Historical Monuments, the cross is in an excellent state of conservation, testifying to the quality of its realization and its maintenance over the centuries.

A small semicircular parapet surrounds the rear half of the cross, protected by a terminal to prevent vehicle clashes descending the slope. This practical detail illustrates the adaptation of the monument to its immediate environment. The salient benefactor, carved in the stone on the face of the path-oriented base, recalls the religious and community function of the cross, probably used for pious blessings or halts.

The Bief Road Cross embodies both artistic heritage and collective memory. Its ranking in 1927 underscores its historical and architectural importance, while its presence in the centre of the village makes it a lasting symbol of local life, mixing devotion, art and history.
