Cross road (no CADASTRE box; PUBLIC AREA): classification by decree of 28 April 1980

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de Frais is a monumental cross located in the commune of Frais, in the department of Territoire de Belfort. Dating from 1760, it is to the north of the village, on the edge of departmental road 11. This type of cross, typical of rural areas, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.

Classified as historical monuments since 28 April 1980, this cross illustrates the importance of the religious and architectural heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. The cross-roads, frequent in this region, often marked places of assembly or prayer, reflecting the community and spiritual life of rural populations in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The cross is now owned by the department and is one of the protected elements of the territory of Belfort. Its precise location, close to the Rue de la Saint-Nicolas, makes it a point of local interest for those passionate about history and religious architecture.
