Road Cross of Montvianeix: by order of 14 October 1911
Origin and history
The road cross of Montvianeix, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of October 14, 1911, dates back to the late 16th or early 17th century. This monument is distinguished by its cylindrical barrel topped by an ionic capital, supporting a cross with also cylindrical arms, adorned with florets. One side represents Christ, while the nimbe joining the arms evokes a tree branch, a stylistic detail characteristic of the time.
Located in Saint-Victor-Montvianeix in Puy-de-Dôme (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), this cross of paths illustrates the rural religious heritage of the modern period. Crosses of this type often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks, marking the paths or boundaries of parishes. Their presence reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life of local communities, as well as the symbolic role of these monuments in public space.
Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum indicate that the location of the cross is approximate (level of accuracy estimated at 6/10). No additional information is provided on any sponsors, craftsmen or specific historical events related to its construction. Its classification in 1911, however, reflects its recognized heritage value from the early twentieth century.
