Origin and history

La Croix de chemin so-called Croix du Buisson, located in Pessat-Villeneuve, is a 17th-century historical monument. It was built in 1628 by the Duboys family, lords of La Pauze, as evidenced by the inscription engraved on its western face. This monument consists of a cylindrical base topped by a truncated pyramidal pedestal, decorated with an oval coat of arms and a dedication. The cross itself, made of monolithic stone, presents a Christ in cross on its western face and a Virgin standing on its eastern face, with arched ends.

The structure rests on a seat of stones, and its prismatic barrel ssamincit up, crowned by a bracelet of round pearls. The west side of the pedestal is 1628 and a coat of arms in a cartridge, while the north side has a sign. Listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 27 December 1972, this cross marks the local landscape, located on the edge of the Chemin de la Chapellière à la Croix-de-la-Pause.

This type of road cross, frequent in Auvergne, often served as a landmark or symbol of piety for travellers and inhabitants. The sculptures and coat of arms suggest a high-ranking sponsor, here the Duboys family, whose local influence is attested by this monument. The cross also illustrates the religious art of the era, mixing Christian symbolism and decorative elements characteristic of the seventeenth century.
