Stone road cross of the 16th century known as the Croix Saint-Pierre, route d'Epinal : classification by decree of 14 June 1909

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin so-called Croix Saint-Pierre is a historical monument located in Rouvres-la-Chétive, in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 16th century, this stone cross is a typical example of the road crosses erected at that time, often to mark places of devotion or important crossroads. It is located on the Route d'Epinal, a historical axis linking several villages in the region.

In the 16th century, the cross of paths played a central role in the religious and social life of rural communities. They served as spiritual landmarks, as gathering points for processions, and sometimes as bounds for parish territories. Their presence reflected the importance of the Christian faith in everyday life, as well as the need to symbolically mark the rural space.

These monuments were often erected by local lords, religious brotherhoods or village communities, although the sources do not specify the exact origin of this cross.
